Dear Burr Families,
Next week is Open House. This is a great opportunity to meet your child's teacher, learn about the work your child is doing in their classes, and learn some more global things about Burr School. New this year is having an opportunity to meet Burr's specialists. They will be in the front lobby at 5:30 to meet and greet parents. I would encourage you to attend.
Additionally, I will be sharing a more global view of Burr School at 6:45 in the gym as well as introduce all of Burr staff. There are three main areas of focus for our school this year. They include: 1) Improving students' engagement and facility with writing. 2) Enhancing our early intervention processes and instruction. The unifying idea of this work is that all students are the collective responsibility of all staff. 3) Continuing to enhance positive relationships between staff and students and students and students.
In the spirit of relationship building, here is a link to a short article (for parents) titled Kicking Off the School Year With Intention. It's about the importance of teachers making time for relationship building when setting up the year. I share this not necessarily because you are a classroom teacher (or want to be one) but because I want you to understand the work happening at Burr. What it is and why we are doing it. Culture building is as important (if not more important) than content when working with students. Enjoy. https://www.edutopia.org/article/kicking-school-year-intention
If you haven't already done so, please make sure you set your child's default after school plans. (For many students it is the bus.) We have approximately 100 students who are not currently linked to Dismissal Manager. We have sent follow up e-mails with reminders about how to set your child's default plans. Please note that there is a big safety component for us to have this information. It's how we know - at dismissal - where students are and where they are going. If you have any questions about how to set your child's default, don't hesitate to call the main office. We no longer take notes or e-mails for dismissal changes.
BEGINNING OF SCHOOL DOCUMENTS
On our website are forms to help you begin the school year. They are accessible through the Parents Page under Documents:https://burr.fairfieldschools.org/parents
MORNING ARRIVAL-DROP OFF CIRCLE
I wanted to share some important reminders about morning drop off in the circle in the front of the building. These are all critical to the safety of students, staff, and parents.
- Please do not pass cars that are dropping off students in the circle.
- Please do not drop students off in the parking lot. They must wait until they reach Burr staff in the circle. This will actually make the process go faster.
- Please do not back up your car or try to turn around. After dropping your child off in the circle, follow the line of cars around the circle in order to exit.
PICTURE DAY SCHOLARSHIPS
Picture Day at Burr is Wednesday, September 25th. The PTA and photography company have generously made available ten scholarships for pictures. If you need a scholarship to pay for pictures, please contact me directly at [email protected]
COACH DANA CAVALEA
I am excited to offer a special parent night presentation with Coach Dana Cavalea on Monday night October 7th at 7:00PM at Burr. Coach Cavalea is a strength and life coach who has spent the majority of his career as the Director of Performance for the New York Yankees. In addition to working with high level athletes, coaches, CEOs and Executives, he is an international speaker and consultant. He will be speaking to Burr students on October 8th during the school day. Please join us for this special night.
QUICK FEEDBACK SURVEY
In past years, I have invited parents to read a book as a community. Previous choices include Mindset by Carol Dweck and The Smartest Kids in the World by Amanda Ripley. This year I want to do something a little different. I want to offer a topic (important to parents) that we can discuss at select Principal's Coffee meetings during the year. With that in mind, I have included a link to a survey (a very short survey) that will help me determine topics / short articles that are meaningful to parents. If you could complete it (it should only take a minute), that would be appreciated. Here is the link. https://forms.gle/eoziXxT8dmrynXUj6
