Principal's Message: 5/3/19

May 3, 2019

Dear Burr Families,

Welcome to May! The next month is extremely busy and will pass quickly.

Some quick reminders about important upcoming events.

Kindergarten orientation is Thursday, May 9th from 1:00-2:00. If you have not yet registered your child for kindergarten, please do so at Central Office. If you have an appointment, but have not yet registered, you are welcome to attend with your child. A separate letter has been sent through Infinite Campus to all kindergarten families with details about the orientation.

My next Principal's coffee - transitioning to middle school - is Wednesday, May 15th at 10:00 in the library. Please join Tomlinson's Principal, Anthony Formato, his staff, and me for a question and answer session abut middle school. In the past, it has been a very informative and helpful opportunity to learn about middle school and get questions answered about the transition process and having a middle school child.

The fifth grade moving up ceremony will occur on Wednesday, June 12th at 1:30. A separate letter to fifth grade parents with more details about the ceremony will be sent through Infinite Campus next week.

Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank you in advance to the PTA for all of the wonderful things they have planned. The entire Burr staff greatly appreciates it. Additionally, I would encourage you and your child to let your child's teacher know how much they appreciate them through writing and artwork. This could take the form of a card, letter or e-mail. Teachers tend to keep these kinds of celebratory artifacts forever.

One final FYI - a silver necklace was found in the parking lot. If it belongs to you (or you know who is belongs to), please contact me.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Jason

DISMISSAL MANAGER

We have gotten off to a really good start with Dismissal Manager. Many parents are using it, and from the school side, it has proven to be extremely helpful. Please note: If you haven't already registered, please do so. We still have a number of students who have not yet been registered. Since this is the system we will be using (and not notes or e-mails), we really appreciate your cooperation and help. If you try to register and can't, please let us know. Your log in credentials may have expired from when we first sent them to you. Finally, please do your best to use the system before 2:00 each day. Change of dismissal calls and e-mails to the office after 2:00 should only be used for emergencies.

LOST AND FOUND

Our Lost and Found has become quite large. Just an FYI - we will be donating clothing left in Lost and Found after May 17th. If you notice a piece of clothing missing, please encourage your child to look for it in Lost and Found. You are also welcome to wade through the clothes if you are at Burr.

A WEEK AT A GLANCE

A lot of poetry is being written at Burr this month!

Fifth graders investigating river samples!

Story mountains in third grade!

SBA TESTING

Burr continues SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment) testing. This is an assessment given to all third, fourth, and fifth grade students statewide. A few quick reminders: 1) We highly encourage all students to take the test. Our participation rate is important to how our school is judged by the State of CT, and the SBA gives us valuable and actionable data on how our students are performing within our curriculum. It is a challenging test, but a good test, and we value the results. 2) Please make sure your child is in school, on time, during the weeks their grade is assessed. I have included the schedule below. 3) Encourage your child to try their best and have confidence that they can do well. (They can!) 4) Like every morning, make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast and has a good night's sleep.

May 6 - 10 - Grade 3 Math

May 13 - 15 - Grade 5 Math
