April 26, 2019
Dear Burr Families,
We are gearing up for the end of the year - which includes new and exciting beginnings and bittersweet endings.
Kindergarten orientation is fast approaching. This year it will be Thursday, May 9th from 1:00-2:00. If you have not yet registered your child for kindergarten, please do so at Central Office. If you have an appointment, but have not yet registered, you are welcome to attend with your child. A separate letter has been sent through Infinite Campus to all kindergarten families with details about the orientation.
The fifth grade moving up ceremony will occur on Wednesday, June 12th at 1:30. A separate letter to fifth grade parents with more details about the ceremony will be sent through Infinite Campus in the next two weeks.
Congratulations to fifth grader Leni Charrette for being named the Superintendent's Award Winner for Burr for 2019. This award is based on three types of criteria: 1) Academic effort in school 2) Demonstration of leadership at school 3) Service work outside of school. We had many wonderful, qualified fifth graders who were candidates for the award. It was so difficult choosing one student. Congratulations to all of our fifth graders for being tremendous role models and citizens.
Have a wonderful weekend!
If you have information to share about your child and their class placement for next year, you are welcome to write me a letter or e-mail. Letters are due by Friday, May 3rd. Some reminders about this process:
- Please do not request a specific teacher. We are not able to honor any direct requests.
- If there is a friend that you want your child placed with, please let me know. We will do our best. We are not able to honor multiple friend requests. Also, while students are disappointed when they are not placed with friends, the staff at Burr feel that this is a learning experience and gives students the opportunity to make new friends.
- If there is a student that you do not wish your child placed with, please let me know. We will honor these requests only if there is a past history of documented problems between your child and this child.
- Please feel free to share information about your child in your letter/email. This could include their learning style, learning strengths, and needs. Any insight you can give us into how your child learns best would be greatly appreciated.
For fifth grade parents (and parents of students at all grades at Burr who are interested), I will be having a Principal's Coffee on the topic of transitioning to middle school on Wednesday, May 15th at 10:00 in the library. Please join Tomlinson's Principal, Anthony Formato, his staff, and me for a question and answer session abut middle school. In the past, it has been a very informative and helpful opportunity to learn about middle school and get questions answered about the transition process and having a middle school child.
We are looking for parent volunteers for Third Grade Literary Lunch Bunches during the month of May. Literary Lunch Bunches are fun book clubs that occur during students' lunch period - which is 12:35-1:05. Clubs meet once per week, and you have the opportunity to facilitate a book discussion with students each week on a part of the book. It's a lot of fun, students are very enthusiastic, and it's a great opportunity to spend time talking about books! if you are interested, please let me know by Monday, April 29th.
Additionally, we have sent home permission slips with third grade students that has a list of books. Students are asked to make a first and second choice. We will do our best to match students with their first choice. There are a limited amount of spots, so please return the form by Monday, April 29th to your child's homeroom teacher.
We have gotten off to a really good start with Dismissal Manager. Many parents are using it, and from the school side, it has proven to be extremely helpful. Please note: If you haven't already registered, please do so. We still have approximately 80 students who have not yet been registered. Since this is the system we will be using (and not notes or e-mails), we really appreciate your cooperation and help. If you try to register and can't, please let us know. Your log in credentials may have expired from when we first sent them to you. Finally, please do your best to use the system before 2:00 each day. Change of dismissal calls and e-mails to the office after 2:00 should only be used for emergencies.

Burr continues SBA (Smarter Balanced Assessment) testing. This is an assessment given to all third, fourth, and fifth grade students statewide. A few quick reminders: 1) We highly encourage all students to take the test. Our participation rate is important to how our school is judged by the State of CT, and the SBA gives us valuable and actionable data on how our students are performing within our curriculum. It is a challenging test, but a good test, and we value the results. 2) Please make sure your child is in school, on time, during the weeks their grade is assessed. I have included the schedule below. 3) Encourage your child to try their best and have confidence that they can do well. (They can!) 4) Like every morning, make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast and has a good night's sleep.
